Baila is a form of music, popular in Sri Lanka and among Goan Catholics. The genre originated centuries ago among the Portuguese Burghers and Sri Lankan Kaffirs.
Moratuwa has produced a large number of these artists and is known as Bayila’s unofficial home. The Roshan Fernando Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of baila and other musicians. Vernon Corea, a radio broadcaster, is credited with introducing Bayila music to the English-speaking world through English-language programs broadcast on Radio Ceylon and BBC Radio London in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
